Cantilever House Case Study
A study in form, contrast, and the architecture of light

The facade is a study in material contrast. A robust concrete base anchors the home to its site, while the delicate horizontal lines of the black steel screen and Evaya external venetian blinds float effortlessly above. This interplay of weight and lightness, of solidity and transparency, sets the tone for the architectural journey within.

An Architecture of Curated Contrast
Inside, the home unfolds into a generous open-plan kitchen, meals, and living area that opens out to a north-facing outdoor entertaining space. The interior palette continues the exploration of contrast established on the exterior, with each material chosen for its ability to speak in opposition to its neighbour.
Natural timber ceilings bring an inherent warmth and acoustic softness to the spaces, acting as a counterpoint to the cool, robust presence of polished concrete floors below. Black stained timber joinery grounds the living areas, creating sophisticated, moody focal points that anchor the expansive volumes without diminishing their sense of openness.

Framing the Collection
For the clients, both avid art enthusiasts, the thoughtful integration of their collection was a paramount consideration in the design process. The architecture responds not merely as a container, but as a curated gallery space — where walls, sightlines, and proportions are carefully calibrated to ensure each piece is celebrated within the home.
The muted, sophisticated material palette of concrete, black timber, and natural wood provides an elegant backdrop that allows the artwork to command attention without competing with the architecture. Light is controlled with precision, ensuring that each canvas is illuminated with the same care afforded to any dedicated gallery space.

Filtered Light and Environmental Control
The dramatic front screen, integrating high-performance Evaya ev80 external venetian blinds, serves a dual purpose of aesthetic definition and environmental moderation. It filters harsh sunlight, casting dynamic, ever-changing shadow patterns across the interior surfaces throughout the day — transforming the facade into a living instrument of light.
This meticulous approach to light and shade, combined with the seamless connection to the north-facing outdoor entertaining space, ensures the home is as responsive to its environment as it is visually striking. The blinds are engineered for high-performance external use, reducing solar heat gain while maintaining the refined visual character of the facade at every hour.

The Interior Sequence
Beyond the kitchen and living spaces, the home’s private zones are equally considered. Bedrooms are positioned to benefit from the privacy afforded by the cantilevered screen, with the Evaya blinds allowing occupants to modulate their connection to the street and the sky with precision.
Throughout the home, the material language remains consistent and disciplined. Polished concrete floors extend from the living areas into the more private spaces, creating a sense of spatial continuity. Joinery is resolved with the same rigour applied to the exterior — flush, considered, and free of unnecessary ornamentation.

Detail as Discipline
The project demonstrates that restraint is not an absence of ambition, but its highest expression. Each junction is resolved cleanly, each material allowed to express its inherent qualities without embellishment. The black steel of the cantilevered screen finds its echo in the joinery and hardware within, creating a coherent material narrative that runs from street to garden.
This disciplined approach ensures longevity — not only in durability, but in aesthetic relevance. Cantilever House is a home that will age with the same quiet confidence with which it was conceived.
